Historic City of Toledo
Toledo is home to more than 2,000 years of history, serving as a Roman municipium, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, a fortress of the Emirate of Cordoba, an outpost of the Christian kingdoms fighting the Moors and, in the 16th century the temporary seat of supreme power under Charles V.
Early Afternoon: Arrive to Toledo & begin the self guided 1.4 kilometer walking tour
Plaza de Zocodover: The former economic nerve center of the city for most of the city’s history.
Calle de Comercio: A main artery of the historic district and home to many local owned shops. Recently the street has seen more big name brands take over the local shops.
Plaza de Ayuntamiento: An area that combines religious and political power with the presence of the cathedral and castle.
Toledo Cathedral: One of the great examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. Built on the site of a former Mosque in the 13th century.
Santo Tome: Home to the famous painting by El Greco, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.
Army Museum: Situated in the Alcázar fortress, the museum holds military artifacts.
Santa Cruz Museum: This hospital turned museum features three areas: 1. Archaeology — Roman, Visigoth, Moorish and Mudéjar cultures; 2. Fine Arts — El Greco + 16th- and 17th-century paintings from Toledo; 3. Industrial Arts — popular culture and traditional local crafts
El Greco Museum:A museum dedicated to El Greco’s works. Located in the Jewish quarter.
Finish walking tour & depart for Avila or back to Madrid.
