The World’s Fair approached San Francisco about hosting the international fair in 1915, and the city agreed. It was then that the concept and design for the Palace of Fine Arts was born.
Though the building was originally due to be deconstructed following the fair, the locals loved the architecture and grounds so much they halted the effort. In the following years, the building served as a warehouse, book distribution center, and military storage space.
In 1962 a nonprofit began to look after the restoration of the Palace. Since then, it’s served as a venue for local events and a space for tourists.
